Description
EVAM consits of a collection of:
-virus strains of medical and veterinary interest,
-products derived from these same viruses which are useful for public and private actors in the field of fundamental and applied research.
EVAM is the largest collection of viruses in Europe and in the top five internationally. At the local, regional and national levels, EVAM platform has all the authorizations to handle viruses in accordance with the regulations. At the international level, EVAM has been the coordinator of the EVA project funded by the European Commission since 2008 and until 2023. The biobank is therefore part of a European and international network of biological resources and has leadership in this activity.
More than 600 perfectly characterized viral strains are currently listed and made available to the scientific community on a web-catalogue (https://www.european-virus-archive.com). Also, EVAM hosts panels or virus-related products such as reference material for e.g., diagnostic and detection of viruses, includign nucleic acids, antigiens or antibodies.
The collection is partly composed of viruses collected around the Mediterranean and in tropical areas. The list of past and present EVAM users demonstates that the biobank has an international coverage, and that the bank is also of interest for both the academic and private and industrial sectors in the field of infectious diseases.
