General description
Although it's a major field of clinical medicine, critical care is not very well represented in the standard medical curriculum. This CIVIS BIP aims to help bridge this gap by providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical training in critical care medicine.
The virtual part of the programme is designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge on respiratory physiology and basics of mechanical ventilation, shock, CPR, airway management, crisis resource management, invasive procedures and ethics.
The teaching material is provided via the e-learning platform Moodle. Students can work through the assigned teaching material at their individual pace. An online-multiple choice test at the end of the virtual part ensures a comparable level of knowledge for all the participants.
During the physical mobility part of the BIP, students will have the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the online component through practical workshops and in-person simulation training.
The collaboration between UofG, UT, SUR and UAM gives the students the unique opportunity to compare and contrast a diversity of practices, to learn new skills and different ways of applying them and to consider different cultural viewpoints in tackling the same challenge.
Main topics addressed during the course
This CIVIS BIP will provide students with basic theoretical knowledge, in combination with hands-on training in the field of critical care:
- Recognition of critical illness
- Airway management
- Advanced life support
- Oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation
- Organ support
- Trauma
- Medical ethics
- Teamwork and non-technical skills
- Sedation and analgesia
Learning outcomes
Following this course, students will have the necessary theoretical knowledge to identify, assess and manage critically ill or injured patients. They will also be encouraged to reflect on their actions according to ethical guidelines and to develop an awareness of their own stress resilience.
