Collaborative Research Initiative on Solar Energy Storage for a Sustainable Energy Transition

Background and Rationale

The global energy transition requires scalable, efficient, and sustainable energy storage solutions to support the increased deployment of renewable energy sources. Solar energy, while abundant and clean, presents intermittency challenges that necessitate advanced storage systems to ensure grid stability, reliability, and energy security.

This collaboration seeks to establish a joint research initiative between Eduardo Mondlane University and identified institutions, focused on innovative solar energy storage technologies and their integration into modern energy systems.

Objectives

The main objectives of this collaboration are:

  • To develop and test innovative solar energy storage technologies (e.g., battery systems, thermal storage, hybrid storage solutions)
  • To improve energy efficiency and grid integration of photovoltaic systems
  • To assess techno-economic feasibility and lifecycle sustainability of storage solutions
  • To apply for joint national and European funding opportunities
  • To promote interdisciplinary research combining engineering, environmental science, and energy policy

Planned Activities

The collaboration will include:

  • Joint research proposals and scientific publications
  • Exchange of researchers, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows
  • Co-supervision of graduate theses
  • Organization of workshops, seminars, and training schools
  • Development of pilot or demonstration projects
  • Engagement with industry stakeholders and policymakers

Expected Outcomes and Impact

  • This initiative will contribute to accelerating the energy transition by enhancing the performance, sustainability, and economic viability of solar energy storage systems. It will strengthen international research cooperation, foster innovation, and support climate neutrality objectives.
  • The collaboration is expected to produce high-impact publications, joint funding applications, and long-term strategic partnerships while contributing to sustainable development goals and decarbonization strategies.
