Critical Care Summer School

The virtual component of the course will be composed of online classes - in the form of recorded video lectures, suggested reading material and instructional videos as a preparation for the practical workshops and simulation training. The Virtual component of this BIP is designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge on the topics respiratory physiology and basics of mechanical ventilation, shock, CPR, airway management, crisis resource management, invasive procedures and ethics. Teaching material is provided via the e-learning platform Moodle. Students can work through the assigned teaching material at their individual pace. An online-multiple choice test at the end of the virtual part ensures a comparable level of knowledge of all participants.. Critical care is a major field of clinical medicine but it is not very well represented in the standard medical curriculum. This CIVIS Summer School will provide students with basic theoretical knowledge in combination with hands-on training in the field of critical care..

Academic pre-requisites for applicants Students of Medicine, or Nursing. Students should already have gathered first clinical experience. English B2 Minimum.

Physical Part Description The Physical component of the programme will include hands-on sessions on - bed-side teaching - simulation - case presentation and group discussions Students will have the opportunity to visit the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and other hospitals in the region, and use the simulation rooms to put the theoretical knowledge acquired during the online component into practice via the practical workshops and simulation trainings delivered in person . The collaboration between UofG, UT, SUR and AMU means that during the intensive mobility period of 5 days, students have the unique opportunity to compare and contrast a diversity of practices, to learn new skills and different ways of applying them through the interaction with teachers from across Europe, and to consider different cultural viewpoints in tackling the same challenge. There will be an assessment at the end of the physical component of this programme. Accommodation for the group during the summer programme has been reserved at our Kelvinhaugh Street residence for 5 nights 8-12 July 2024. Kelvinhaugh Street offers single standard rooms in five-bed flats, with shared bathroom facilities.
