 \nWhat can 19th-century Europe teach us about today’s multilingual Europ
 ean Union? Join the enlightening first online lecture hosted by the Univer
 sity of Salzburg - Language Center\, to explore how historical lessons fro
 m the multilingual Habsburg Monarchy resonate with present-day EU language
  policies. From the multilingual Habsburg Empire in the 19th century to to
 day’s EU\, which is also committed to multilingualism and linguistic div
 ersity. The journey begins with Napoleon and the reorganisation of Europe 
 at the Congress of Vienna and it ends with the Austrian Imperial Council\,
  the world’s first multinational parliament\, a “League of Nations in 
 miniature”. Two members of the Imperial Council\, who would not be neces
 sarily expected to be members of this body\, are presented as examples. Si
 milarities and differences to the language policy of today’s European Un
 ion\, successes and challenges\, aspirations and reality will be closely e
 xamined using concrete examples. Serious and humorous aspects on the subje
 ct of “multilingualism” will round off the lecture. Led by Achim Braun
 \, this engaging first session will trace the evolution of multilingual go
 vernance from the Congress of Vienna to the formation of the Austrian Impe
 rial Council—the world’s first truly multinational parliament. Dubbed 
 a “League of Nations in miniature\,” this historical model serves as a
  springboard to examine both parallels and divergences with modern EU ling
