Brief description
Pedagogies of discomfort refer to the process of self-examination that is needed for teachers and students to critically engage with their ideological traditions and create understandings that lead to new ways of being and acting.
Within this process, emotions are a powerful tool to question preconceived beliefs, and facilitate debate and reflection amongst teachers and students.
The aim of this workshop is to outline the four basic elements that could help educators practice the pedagogy of discomfort:
- spectating versus witnessing, understanding and exploring emotions,
- avoiding the binary innocence-guilt,
- learning to inhabit ambiguous selves.
